This Mockingbird is at a Rock City barn birdhouse. 30 years ago barns all over East Tennessee were painted very similiar to this birdhouse. As the barns became less frequent these birdhouses became popular in the same area. It reminds us of times gone by. Don't know that I have ever seen a bird actually use one.

I seen those bird houses before.
Mockingbirds are a rare sight up here in Minnesota.
Interesting history and an interesting bird that I hope to see myself in the future!
Leedra: Is that bird mocking your post? That's their job.
Wonderful picture! I remember those barns all over the area of the south where Rock City was accessible. Country folk can't travel far because of their livestock, in many cases, and they often went to Rock City and Ruby Falls and maybe Roan Mountain or to Chattanooga to see the Choo-choo and perhaps took a quick trip to the beach, if their kids were lucky. Could only be gone from home a day or two while someone took over the feeding and/or milking and egg-gathering for them. Not to mention that overnight stays were just not done much unless you had a relative nearby! So, almost everyone in the deep South saw Rock City at some time or other, and those barns were wonderful to see as you traveled down the road headed to your destination! Oh, and along the side of the road were those little Burma Shave signs that had one or two words on each little sign, and you drove along and slowly read the whole message as you came to them. Ahhh, the good old days! :-)
Hi Leedra,
Like the Tile Lady said...I remember these days, too. Barns down in central Mississippi were painted with 'See Rock City' signs. It was a cheap and semi-permenant billboard and the people were glad to have their barns painted.
