I had just seen the male Red Bellied Woodpecker at this tree when the female Red Bellied Woodpecker came to the tree too. Notice that tail.
I am sure the tail helps them balance on the side of the tree.

Please see the original post at Leedra's Photos For Fun to see more photographs of the female Red Bellied Woodpecker, and the male Red Bellied Woodpecker that I had just seen at the tree.

Brilliant detail in these shots! That must've been a serious telephoto you were using. I can't imagine you got that close otherwise.
I also have a problem getting close. Very nice shots. I really enjoyed your pictures of Newfoundland Gap. What a gorgeous view!!!
Oh, she's wonderful! These photos, closer, have such clarity, and it's so great that you were able to photograph both the male and the female!
The pictures of the woodpecker are wonderful!
Awesome pictures of a very prety bird.

Great captures! Very nice work.
Wonderful captures! Wish I could get close-ups like that!
Awe---seems as if several bloggers are talking about their Red-bellied Woodpeckers now. Guess that means I need to 'feature' mine also!!!! Great pictures..
Hugs,
Betsy
Great post - I love watching woodpeckers working a tree trunk for food.
