These photographs were taken September 6, at the overlook going into Cataloochee Cove in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. This cove is accessed from I-40 exit 20 in North Carolina. Less than an hour from my house, but I have never even heard of this cove until a month ago. From the interstate it is just 10 miles, but about 5 of it is gravel, on the side of the mountain. Up 5 miles and then down 5 miles into the cove, about half of each way is gravel. The bad part is while you are in the cove you know you have to go back that same way to get back out.These photographs were actually taken as we were leaving, late in the evening.

ReplyDeleteI love all your GSMNP pics. They remind me of my intentions to revisit there sometime. I've always been there too late to see the azaleas at their peak. Any advice as to timing???

ReplyDeleteMy grandpa was from West Virginia and if somebody took him somewhere by car he would pass places he never heard of and they would be in the next hollar as he called them or on the other side of the mountain. Amazing. He only went as far as his cows went and then he went back home.

ReplyDeleteLeedra, The trip out to the valley was as thrilling (or should I say scary) as just being in the valley! I was amazed at the hairpin curves and the parts of the road that were one-way! I felt like I had to sit in the middle to keep from falling off the mountain! It was worth the drive, after all.
